31/05/2010 A lap at Spa with Menno Kuus

“Spa is a very special track, my favourite one”, Belgian Menno Kuus told us, who has a lot of experience on the illustrious circuit. “Once you come down from the La Source Hairpin, you go up the world famous Raidillon. In a GT4 BMW M3, flat out is impossible, definitely not in race conditions. The uphill – in 5th gear - is tremendous and you have to get the car straight as early as possible in order to gain speed for the climb to Les Combes, where you can brake late, as it’s still uphill.”
After the left-right-left combination at Les Combes, the drivers go downhill for a 180° corner. “Brussels is a tricky one, you have to do it smoothly and the left hander following Brussels is also a difficult one. Exiting this left-hand corner, one should avoid to go over the curbs with all four wheels, as it’s often still wet on that spot or it’s dirty and dirt on your tyres could ruin the entire fast and technical downhill section following this lefthander. The ‘Double Gauche’ has to be taken fast without going over the white line as this could give you a penalty. Here we’re in 4th and 5th gear. The Fagnes section, with a fast right-left-right combination is also very technical, but with 3rd and 4th gear corners. It’s important to stay on the right side of the first exit, otherwise you could ruin the two other corners.”
“After a flat out right-hand corner we’re back on the old section of the circuit. The exit of this last corner will determine the speed until reaching the new bus stop so it’s very important to exit as fast as you can. Blanchimont is challenging, and you’re permanently trying to find your limits here …”
“The old bus stop has disappeared and the new one is very different. You have to avoid getting out of the first right hander too fast, because that will make it impossible to take the left hander correctly and if you ruin that, your speed on the straight line is gone. Finally we arrive again at La Source for yet another lap.”
